Claude Hudson (Vigo County Jail)

TERRE HAUTE, IN – A man carrying a knife was arrested after police say he attacked an officer while approaching kidnap survivor Elizabeth Smart.

Claude Hudson, 80, attended the Elizabeth Smart Speaker Series at Indiana State University on Monday evening.

An officer saw Hudson playing with a knife while staring at Smart. Hudson bypassed the line of people who were waiting for Smart and started walking toward her, with the knife now in his pocket, according to WTHI.

When the officer tried stopping him, Hudson punched the officer in the stomach multiple times, according to the police report.

Hudson was arrested and is being held on $25,000 bail.

Hudson has a lengthy criminal history, including a conviction for attempted murder in the early 1990’s, according to CBS News.

Ms. Smart was not harmed and continued her work undeterred, a spokesman said.
